A Piece of Singapore History
More Than A Home
Completed in 1867, MacRitchie was the first impounding reservoir in Singapore, made possible through a donation of S$13,000 by philanthropist Tan Kim Seng. In 1907, it was enlarged and named Thomson Road Reservoir. It was renamed again in 1922 as MacRitchie Reservoir, in honour of the Municipal Engineer, James MacRitchie, who designed and built the reservoir.

39A Westlake Ave
Chief architect Kee from Freight Architects was motivated to create an immersive, natural retreat by the property's setting and proximity to the MacRitchie reservoir, which led to features like the double-volume, full-height glass living and dining area that augments the interior space, with the living and dining halls surrounded by water to create a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.
With a cascading waterfall gushing into the pool, the therapeutic water sounds rejuvenates the senses while hydrotherapy can be enjoyed in the linked jacuzzi to the pool. The spacious master bedroom also opens out to its own outdoor garden and spa pool on the top floor.
"It's conceptualised like a conservatory, immersed in a garden and surrounded by a lake," muses Kee.

Design Inspiration
Cultivating Collective Synergy

Jing Zhi Kee
Jing Zhi Kee
Chief Architect
Chief architect Kee aimed to create a natural sanctuary for the property, drawing inspiration from its location and proximity to MacRitchie reservoir. This resulted in the incorporation of features such as a double-volume, full-height glass living and dining area that seamlessly connects to the garden and pool, evoking the feeling of a conservatory surrounded by a lush garden and serene lake.
To further enhance the natural aesthetic, the architect utilized materials such as timber and stone for the façade, while the terraces were adorned with plants. The nature theme is also evident in the custom-designed garden at 39 Westlake Ave, which was created in collaboration with renowned Hong Kong jewellery designer and artist Dickson Yewn.
Meanwhile, 39A Westlake Ave boasts luxurious water features that draw inspiration from the nearby lake and reservoir, adding to the property's overall ambiance of tranquility and natural beauty.

Design Collaboration

Curated luxe resides in this cross-disciplinary design collaboration – a first for Dickson Yewn as the multi-talented Hong Kong artist and fine jeweller marries his passion in contemporary jewelry design with contemporary art to create a limited edition garden exclusively for one of Kuhlmann Land’s semi-detached house under The Kuhlmann Collection.
Ruminating cultural heritage set the foundation in the design collaboration, as Kuhlmann Land wants each piece of real estate created to encapsulate the story of heritage and design experiences like no other. Dickson Yewn, whose design philosophy is steeped in a culture of rich Chinese heritage, is the perfect partner for the collaboration as Kuhlmann is also rooted in the heritage of quality modular
carpentry for almost a century.
“The motivation for all my works from contemporary Chinese fine jewelry to contemporary arts has always been hinged on my desire to bring back traditional culture into modern-day living. If traditional culture cannot live side by side with contemporary lifestyle, it would only render its existence to the museums. Hence the inspiration for this garden came from Chinese fengshui principles and traditional Taoism philosophy of nature and the five cosmic agents of change – Yin Yang Wuxing, tracing back all the way to I-Ching, the Book of Change,” reflects Dickson Yewn, creative director and founder of Yewn.
