Pyrite House is a private residential project, mixing innovative design with structural flexibility to create an inspired living space. The brief was to create a space where 3 families could stay together, enjoying the best of communal living while having their own private spaces. Freight Architects looked into metaphors of inter-connectedness, and developed 3 separate volumes enclosing a central, sheltered courtyard that would serve as the heart of the house.
The three slanted volumes are finished in grey render and timber cladding, and the gaps between them are covered by a glass roof, which turns the courtyard into a light-filled atrium crossed by bridges and balconies. A faceted timber stair climbs between angled walls toward a rooflight, and the shared living and dining space opens through a tall frame to the garden.
